Protected views

This layer has been captured by FIND using planning documentation provided by local and regional planning authorities. Views to, from, and between buildings and places are protected under regional and local planning policy in many areas. This map shows the degree to which protected views overlap, and subsequently how they affect planning in a given area.

At a regional level, certain strategic views are sometimes outlined as being of great importance to the character of the region. For example, the Greater London Authority defines 11 views by co-ordinates in the London View Management Framework (2007). These include views towards St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London and the Palace of Westminster. Qualitative Viewing Assessment Areas are vistas that are not defined by co-ordinates such as river views, and have been interpreted by FIND.

At a local level, views are also occasionally set out in planning authorities’ Local Plans or Local Development Framework documentation and are defined slightly differently by each local authority. If you require further detail or clarification please contact the Local Authorities directly.

This layer is a hazard map and it should be used for site analysis as it will provide an early identification of restrictions that may affect development projects.
