Listed buildings

Many buildings and monuments are given listed building status because of their special architectural or historical importance. This information layer displays the locations and grades of these specially conserved structures and is provided by English Heritage and Historic Scotland. Certain restrictions apply during the design, planning and development of these buildings and monuments. The listed building categories for England are:

  • Grade I - buildings of exceptional interest
  • Grade II* - particularly important buildings of more than special interest
  • Grade II - buildings of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them

The listed building categories for Scotland:

  • A - buildings of national or international importance
  • B - buildings of regional or more than local importance
  • C - buildings of local importance

In England there are approximately 370,000 entries currently protected by listing and, of those, the majority (over 92%) are Grade II. Grade I and II* buildings may be eligible for English Heritage grants for urgent major repairs. In Scotland, around 50% of the approximately 68,000 listed properties fall into category B and around 38% are category C.

You can link to the Images of England website or the Historic Scotland website for additional information about listed buildings. Images of England is a 'point in time' photographic library of England’s listed buildings, recorded at the turn of the 21st century. You can view over 300,000 images of England’s built heritage from lamp posts to lavatories, phone boxes to toll booths, mile stones to gravestones, as well as thousands of bridges, historic houses and churches. The listing status and descriptions shown on the Images of England website are as at February 2001.
