Borehole index

This layer and data download contains the locations and summary information for all onshore boreholes and water wells held by the British Geological Survey (BGS). When viewed on the FIND Map this includes a link directly to the BGS website bore log details. There are in excess of 1 million records dating back over 200 years ranging from one to several thousand metres in depth.

The Mining Industry Act 1926 and Water Resources Act 1991 require organisations to notify the BGS prior to commencing drilling certain holes for water or minerals.

Some of the boreholes are classed as ‘commercial-in-confidence’ meaning the location can be shown but no further details can be released. Zero values for depth signify that the depth has not been catalogued or has not been made available by the BGS.

  • Boreholes

Records of boreholes, shafts and wells from all forms of drilling and site investigation work carried out onshore and near shore across Great Britain.

  • Water wells

Contains details of water wells that have been drilled, as well as a summary of information recorded at the time of drilling, such as the lithology, well construction, water chemistry, water levels and yields.
