FIND June 2011 Newsletter

While many of us will be looking forward to a long hot summer, others will be praying for rain. At a hastily convened meeting held last week, government officials, experts and representatives from utility companies discussed how best to plan for drought conditions this summer.

Details from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology show that remarkable rainfall patterns across the UK in May produced a decrease in the spatial extent of drought conditions in England and Wales, but an increase in their intensity in the most severely impacted regions.

Late May soil samples from large parts of eastern and central England were the driest on record. This will cause substantial agricultural stress (impacting on crop yields) and increase the risk of forest and heathland fires. In some areas the soil is now so dry that drought conditions will continue even if rainfall returns during the next two months. Scotland, by contrast, had its wettest spring on record.

These extreme conditions underline the fact that fast, effective environmental impact assessments are now essential to all planning.

FIND maps offers instant access to data and reports on soil and aquifer permeability, source protection zones, detailed river networks, historic flooding, National Flood Risk Assessments (NaFRA), flood storage, flood defended areas and much more.

We are currently developing a new service tailored to the specific needs of the environmental sector. Further details about EnviroFIND will be announced in due course.

In the meantime, full details of FIND's environmental data and reports can be found at www.findmaps.co.uk.
