FIND Maps January 2012 Newsletter

Last year we highlighted some of the changes which affected the UK's land-based planning regime. During 2012, for the first time, comprehensive marine planning will become a reality. These changes are being driven by the Marine & Coastal Access Act of 2009.

While land-based planning has become more localised, marine-based planning is to be centrally administered. The devolved administrations will be responsible for overseeing marine planning law in Scotland and Wales, and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) in England.

In April 2011 the MMO introduced a comprehensive Marine Licensing Programme. This new initiative means that anyone planning a project in a marine or coastal environment must now submit details to the MMO. Having reviewed these details, the MMO may then call for a consultation process or, in many cases, a full environmental impact assessment.

In order to satisfy the MMO and the devolved bodies in Scotland and Wales it will be essential for planners to have ready access to environmental, geological and marine mapping data. In response, FIND Maps has launched a new product. MarineFIND, is a range of marine datasets which are currently available to order (see product spotlight below). During 2012 we plan to add these datasets to the already extensive range of datasets available online to view, print and export.
