FIND December 2010 Newsletter

With the winter holiday season almost upon us, many of you will be looking forward to a well deserved break. Whether you plan to spend time in the UK or overseas, there is plenty of information on the web to help you enjoy your chosen destination. You will already be familiar with websites which allow you to see photos and read reviews of hotels, facilities and entertainment. Why not also consult an interactive mapping website?

Google Earth not only allows you to see photos of almost anywhere in the world, its zoom feature means that you can examine specific areas in great detail. This 'bird's eye view' will often reveal features which are not visible at street level and can open up interesting and exciting possibilities.

Until relatively recently, ski enthusiasts had to use paper maps to familiarise themselves with ski runs. This information can now be accessed online or via apps. Feed from live webcams and details of lift/run status, snow conditions, local weather and resort facilities can also be found online; at www.ski.com resorts can even be viewed in full interactive 3D.

Advances in web mapping technology offer benefits to everyone, from individuals planning holidays to big businesses planning massive investments.

We brought you news recently about the imminent closure of the government's MAGIC website. We have since been contacted by Natural England/Defra who inform us that while the current site will indeed be closing, the information it contains will be made available on a new website hosted by Defra. magic.defra.gov.uk is scheduled to go live on 6 January 2011.

Our newsletter this month focuses on Utilities Reports, which are fast becoming FIND's hottest product. During 2010 these reports have grown in popularity as more companies recognise the benefit of using mapped data to inform planning and enhance decision making. Always ahead of the curve, FIND is constantly working to develop new ways to give you access to the data you need.

Seasons greetings and best wishes for the New Year from all at www.findmaps.co.uk!
