Draw a map annotation

You can open a floating tool bar containing all of the drawing tools. Select the black 'Tools' tab which appears in the top right of the map edge when your mouse is hovered over it. By clicking the top of the tool bar the user can drag the tool bar to their most desirable position. To close this toolbar select the cross in the top of the tool bar.

Draw a rectangle or square

To draw a rectangle or a square select the 'Rectangle' tool from the 'Draw' part of the toolbar. You can either manually draw a circle on define its properties with exact spatial values.

To manually draw a rectangle or a square, click on the map at the location of one of the corners, then with the mouse button still pressed, drag your mouse towards the location of the diagonally opposite corner. Width and height dimensions will display next to your mouse pointer while the area and perimeter of the rectangle will be displayed under 'Measure' in the toolbar. Release the mouse button to finish drawing. If you wish to draw a perfect square, hold down the 'Shift' key while drawing.

Use the ‘Advanced Rectangle Options’ panel to manually enter a rectangle or a square’s properties. You can enter X and Y dimensions in metres and corner coordinates.

Select the line and fill colours of the rectangle or square from the colour swatches at the bottom of the toolbar.

Draw a circle

To draw a circle or an oval, select the 'Circle' tool from the 'Draw' part of the toolbar. You can either manually draw a circle on define its properties with exact spatial values .

To manually draw a circle, click on the map where you would like the centre of the circle to be, and then with your mouse button still pressed, drag your mouse away from the centre point until the circle has the desired diameter. The Drawing radius will display next to your mouse pointer while the area and circumference of the circle will be displayed under the 'Measure' part of the toolbar. Release the mouse button to finish drawing. If you wish to draw a perfect circle, hold down the 'Shift' key while drawing the circle. Select the line and fill colours of the circle from the colour swatches at the bottom of the toolbar.

Use the ‘Advanced Circle Options’ panel to manually enter the circle’s properties. You can enter both a radius and centre coordinates.Select the line and fill colours of the rectangle or square from the colour swatches at the bottom of the toolbar.

Draw an arrow

Highlight map features by using an arrow with the 'Arrow' tool from the 'Draw' part of the toolbar. To draw the arrow click on the map at the desired location of the tip of the arrow and then, with the mouse button still pressed, drag the mouse away from the head to determine the size and direction of the arrow. Select the colour of the arrow from the colour swatch at the bottom of the toolbar.

Draw a line or shape

Draw both lines and shapes (polygons) with the 'Line or shape' tool from the 'Draw' part of the toolbar. To draw a line on the map click at the beginning of the line and then click again for every point (node) you wish to add to it. If you wish to close the drawn shape to make a polygon (closed shape) finish the drawing by double clicking at the starting point of your drawing. Each segment length and total length of the line will display next to your mouse pointer. If the shape is closed to form a polygon then the area and perimeter will be displayed under the 'Measure' part of the toolbar. Select the colour of the shape from the colour swatches at the bottom of the toolbar.

Snap to nodes (points) on the FIND Map or OS Plan

To snap to nodes (points) on the FIND Map or OS Plan use the 'Display/snap to nodes' tool from the 'Draw'section' of the toolbar. Alternatively, hold down 'Ctrl' or 'Control' on your keyboard. Both these options will display all nodes on the FIND map or OS plan map backgrounds, click near desired points to snap your line to that point (node). Use the 'Backspace' button on your keyboard to unsnap from your last snapped node if you need to. Releasing 'Crtl' or 'Control' hides the nodes, as does clicking 'Display/snap to nodes' if you have used that option, this will then allow you to carry on creating your line or shape (polygon) without snapping.

Outline a shape on the FIND Map or OS plan

You are able to outline the boundary of any feature on the FIND Map or OS Plan map backgrounds. Select the 'Fill/outline shape' tool from the 'Draw' part of the toolbar, and select the line colour you wish to use from the colours at the base of the toolbar. Click on the map over your target polygon, and the shape will draw automatically.

Holding down 'Shift' as you select multiple features will draw around the outside of all those features

Fill a shape on the FIND Map or OS plan

If you wish to highlight a section of the map by creating an in-filled feature (FIND Map or OS Plan only) use the 'Fill/outline shape' tool from the 'Draw' part of the toolbar. Select the line and fill colours from those available at the bottom of the toolbar. To fill the shape (polygon) click on the map over the target area and the shape will draw.

Holding down 'Shift' as you select multiple features will draw around the outside of all those features.

Merge polygons on the FIND Map or OS plan

If you wish to merge map polygons (shapes) on the map use the 'Merge polygons' tool from the 'Draw' part of the toolbar. Once this tool is selected click on every map polygon you wish to merge into a sigle polygon. This feature only works for the FIND Map and OS Plan. Select the line and fill colours from those available at the bottom of the toolbar as necessary.
